IELTS vs TOEFL: Which Test Should You Take?

Choosing between IELTS and TOEFL is one of the first decisions any student preparing to study, work, or migrate abroad has to make. Both are widely accepted by universities and immigration authorities, but they test English differently — and the right choice often comes down to your own strengths rather than one test being objectively "easier."

Format

IELTS is available in paper-based and computer-delivered formats, with a face-to-face Speaking test conducted by an examiner. TOEFL iBT is fully computer-based, and the Speaking section is recorded and sent for scoring rather than done live. If you find in-person speaking tests more natural than talking into a microphone, that alone can tip the decision toward IELTS.

Scoring

IELTS scores on a 9-band scale, with most university and visa requirements sitting between Band 6.0 and 7.5. TOEFL scores out of 120 points across four sections, with typical requirements ranging from 80 to 100+. Neither scale is harder to score well on — they're just different systems, so check exactly what score your target institution requires before assuming one test suits you better.

Skills emphasis

TOEFL leans heavily academic — its Reading and Listening passages are drawn from university lecture and textbook style content, and Speaking/Writing tasks often ask you to integrate information from a reading and a listening clip. IELTS Academic is also university-focused, but its Speaking test is more conversational, and its Writing Task 1 (describing a chart or graph) is unique to IELTS.

Which one should you take?

• If you prefer a live conversation over recording yourself, and you're comfortable interpreting visual data for writing, IELTS may suit you better.

• If you're used to a fully digital test format and strong at synthesising information from multiple sources, TOEFL may be the more comfortable fit.

• If your destination institution or visa route only accepts one of the two, that requirement settles it — always check first.
