TOEFL Score Converter 2026: Old 0–120 Scores to the New 1–6 Scale
Since 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT has reported scores on a new 1–6 scale. Many of my students still see university and visa requirements written in the old 0–120 format, or have an older TOEFL score and want to know what it means now. This converter uses ETS's official conversion tables, so you can move between the two scales in a few seconds.

Enter an old total score (0–120) to see the new 1–6 score and CEFR level, and add your old section scores (0–30) if you have them. You can also switch tabs to convert a new score back to the old scale, or to compare an IELTS band with TOEFL.
How the new TOEFL score scale works
The scale: each section (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking) and the overall score are reported from 1 to 6, in half-point steps.
The overall score: the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half point. An average of 5.125 rounds down to 5.0, and an average of 5.25 rounds up to 5.5.
CEFR alignment: every score maps directly to a CEFR level, from A1 (1.0–1.5) to C2 (6.0).
The transition period: until January 2028, score reports show three things: your CEFR level, your 1–6 scores and a comparable 0–120 total, so institutions can keep using the old scale while they update their requirements.
Old 0–120 total to new 1–6 score
This is ETS's official concordance for overall scores:
114–120: 6.0 (C2)
107–113: 5.5 (C1)
95–106: 5.0 (C1)
86–94: 4.5 (B2)
72–85: 4.0 (B2)
58–71: 3.5 (B1)
44–57: 3.0 (B1)
34–43: 2.5 (A2)
24–33: 2.0 (A2)
12–23: 1.5 (A1)
0–11: 1.0 (A1)
What common university requirements look like on the new scale
Universities set their own minimum scores, and many have already published requirements on the 1–6 scale. If a course still lists an old 0–120 score, this is where it falls:
79 or 80 is in the 72–85 range, which is 4.0 (B2).
90 is in the 86–94 range, which is 4.5 (B2).
100 is in the 95–106 range, which is 5.0 (C1).
110 is in the 107–113 range, which is 5.5 (C1).
Because each new score covers a range of old scores, requirements of 90 and 94 both sit at 4.5. Always check the university's current entry requirements, or ask the admissions team, before you book a test.
Old section scores (0–30) to the new scale
ETS also publishes section-by-section tables. The same old score can convert differently depending on the section: an old score of 17, for example, is 3.5 in Reading, 4.0 in Listening and Writing, but 3.0 in Speaking.

IELTS and TOEFL compared
ETS has also published how IELTS bands compare with the new TOEFL scale. IELTS does not publish an equivalent table, and universities sometimes set their own equivalences, so treat this as a guide:
IELTS 8.0 to 9.0: TOEFL 6.0
IELTS 7.5: TOEFL 5.5
IELTS 7.0: TOEFL 5.0
IELTS 6.5: TOEFL 4.5
IELTS 6.0: TOEFL 4.0
IELTS 5.5: TOEFL 3.5
IELTS 5.0: TOEFL 2.5
IELTS 4.5: TOEFL 2.0
IELTS 4.0: TOEFL 1.5
