Which English Test for a UK Visa? IELTS for UKVI, PTE, LANGUAGECERT or Trinity (Free Chooser)

If you are applying for a UK visa, settlement or citizenship, you cannot use just any English test. It has to be a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a provider the Home Office approves, taken at an approved centre. Book the wrong one and your result will not count, and you will have paid for a test you cannot use.

This guide shows which tests are approved, which skills they cover and which one fits your route. Use the free chooser first, then read the details.

Which providers does the Home Office approve?

As of October 2026, GOV.UK lists these providers:

  • IELTS SELT Consortium: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, in the UK and abroad.

  • LANGUAGECERT: Academic SELT, General SELT and International ESOL SELT, in the UK and abroad.

  • Pearson: PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home, in the UK and abroad.

  • Trinity College London: Secure English Language Tests for UKVI (ISE and GESE), in the UK only.

  • PSI Services: Skills for English UKVI, outside the UK only.

Find your test

Four skills or two?

Which kind of test you need depends on your route. Skilled Worker and Student visas assess Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Settlement, citizenship and partner routes currently assess speaking and listening only. That is why tests such as IELTS Life Skills, Trinity GESE and PTE Home exist, and why they cannot be used for a Skilled Worker or Student visa.

One catch: IELTS Life Skills stops at B1. If you need B2, you need a four-skill test such as IELTS for UKVI.

From 26 March 2027 many settlement applicants will need B2. The rule text names speaking and listening, but some commentary says all four skills, and the approved test list for B2 settlement had not been confirmed in the sources I checked. The safest plan is to prepare for a four-skill B2 test. My UK English requirements checker shows which scores you need for your route.

Five mistakes that waste a test fee

  • Booking a test that is not approved, or one at a centre that is not approved. Always start from the provider's UKVI or SELT page.

  • Sitting the test too early. Results are valid for 2 years, and the result must be awarded within the 2 years before you apply.

  • Choosing a speaking and listening test for a route that needs four skills.

  • Expecting Life Skills to prove B2. It cannot.

  • Ignoring the ID rules. Check what the provider accepts and make sure the name on your booking matches your ID.

How to choose between the four-skill tests

For most routes the four-skill tests are accepted for the same purposes, so choose on practical grounds: where and when you can get a seat, how quickly you get results, whether you prefer a computer or a paper format, and which task types suit you. IELTS for UKVI has the most preparation material available, while PTE Academic UKVI and LANGUAGECERT can suit people who are comfortable typing and speaking to a computer.

If you are unsure, take a timed practice test in each format and see which one you find easier. My guides to IELTS on computer and how IELTS band scores are calculated are good places to start.
