Academic and Research Skills

Studying in English at a UK university asks for more than good grammar. You need to build an argument, use sources correctly, cite and reference your sources and write in an academic style. I help undergraduate and postgraduate students, including international students, develop these skills so their assignments say what they mean.

What we can work on

Academic writing: essay structure, building and supporting an argument, coherence, and an appropriate academic style.
Critical thinking and reading: evaluating sources, analysing arguments, and developing your own position.
Research skills: research methods, working with sources, and referencing.
Academic communication: expressing complex ideas clearly in writing and in discussion.

I teach you skills rather than writing your work for you. You bring your own draft or assignment brief, and we improve it together.

Practice tasks and progress checks, so you know where you stand and can see your skills improve.
Written feedback on your writing, showing you what to improve.
A study plan built around your goals and your deadlines.

International and multilingual students at UK universities, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and researchers who need to write for publication.

How sessions work and your tutor

Sessions last one hour and take place online over Zoom, Google Meet or your preferred platform. You are welcome to bring a current assignment or draft to work on together. Choose individual sessions for personal feedback, or group sessions at a lower price. Individual sessions are £30 an hour instead of £40 until 31 October.

Your tutor: I am Ali, a UK university lecturer with a Cambridge CELTA and an MA in International Education and Development from the University of Sussex. I have taught English and academic skills at UK colleges and universities for over 13 years.

Will you check my assignment for AI use? I do not write or rewrite assignments. I teach you to improve your own writing, and my blog explains why genuine student writing is sometimes flagged.
Can you help with a deadline this week? Message me with the date and I will say what is realistic.
Do I need to send my work first? It helps. Share your brief and a draft before the session if you can.
